Parents of Blind Children-NJ (POBC-NJ)

Parents of Blind Children-NJ (POBC-NJ) is a statewide organization made up of families, teachers, and friends of blind and visually impaired children. Our goal is to help blind/visually impaired children grow up to be productive, fully functioning, independent members of society by providing information, inspiration, and support to their families and teachers. We are also dedicated to providing ideas, assistance, and information that will help blind/visually impaired children with additional disabilities reach their full potential.

We offer emotional support, a positive attitude toward blindness and the abilities of blind people, networking and contact with other families and with blind adults, a newsletter, advocacy, meetings, and an annual Parents Seminar with practical information and tips, the Blind Children’s Resource Center website: www.blindchildren.org, social and educational events for blind children and their families, the What’s Available display and a Resource List of information, materials, and equipment, a voice on state boards and councils affecting the lives of blind children, and ongoing dialogue with legislators regarding the needs of blind children and their families.

White Cane Awareness Day: teach the world about what the white cane means to blind people

White canes help blind people live the lives we want. The white cane does more than tell the sighted that we’re blind; it is a tool for freedom and self-determination because it allows blind people to come and go on our own. Since we can travel safely and independently, we can contribute in the workplace, in our communities, and in society. Celebrate White Cane Awareness Day on October 15 by giving the gift of independence. To learn more, please visit www.nfb.org/white-cane-awareness-day. If you wish to make a donation during White Cane Day, please visit www.nfb.org/donate2017.
