Spotlight On Our Members: Achievements and Accomplishments

Showing that our members are living the lives they want!

Brian Mackey, treasurer and webmaster of the state affiliate, is an active blind golfer since 2010. He plays close to 40 outings a year in Pennsylvania and New Jersey with the Middle Atlantic Blind Golf Association. Brian is also the proud owner of Mackey Enterprises, LLC, which has been assisting individuals and small businesses perform their personal or work-related data entry, bookkeeping, and WordPress website design projects seen from a different perspective, with a “Blind With Vision” attitude since 2011. in November 2015, Brian successfully launched his company website, http://www.mackeyenterprisesllc.com. Since May 2017, Brian maintains three NFB affiliate websites!

John Cucco, former editor of The Sounding Board, got married on August 27 2016, in Rhode Island.

Serena Cucco, former POBC kid, is now a certified social worker. She graduated from the Colorado Center for the Blind on May 25, 2017.

Jon Gabry, former POBC kid and member of the Deaf-Blind Division, graduated in May 2016 from Bergen Community College with honors. Jon will continue his education at Jersey City University, pursuing a degree in art therapy.

Vee Gaspa, president of the NJ Students Division and general board member of the NFB Students Division, was selected as one of the three interns to attend the 2017 National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute Summer Internship program which takes place from May 27th to August 4th at the NFB Jernigan Institute in Baltimore, Maryland..

Linda Melendez, a member in the Senior and Technology Divisions, chair of the Sports & Recreation Committee, and general board member of the state affiliate and the Central Chapter proudly completed her first half marathon in 2016.

Alice Eaddy, affiliate secretary, and president of the New Jersey and national Deaf-Blind divisions, took ASPIRE (Aspire Support Programs for Independence, Renewal, and Education) facilitators training sponsored by the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and completed the course. These are support groups for people who are blind and visually impaired. Alice is a certified ASPIRE facilitator.

White Cane Awareness Day: teach the world about what the white cane means to blind people

White canes help blind people live the lives we want. The white cane does more than tell the sighted that we’re blind; it is a tool for freedom and self-determination because it allows blind people to come and go on our own. Since we can travel safely and independently, we can contribute in the workplace, in our communities, and in society.
